There is an enchanting quality about Ian Collins newest effort The Map is Not the Territory. It could be the twinkling guitars, the swaying vocals, or the overall feeling of being lost in a blissful time warp. Either way, a fanciful job is done by Collins in crafting an idiosyncratic atmosphere on The Map is Not the Territory that harmonizes and weaves through translucent cadence.
With the track “Beautiful,” there’s the brazen attitude of the protagonist that calls on the fast-motion folk of David Gray. On “Mystery Girl,” Collins’ softens his voice and incorporates the psychedelic blush of 80s Brit-rock. And, with “City Lights,” Collins’ low key voice resonates beneath whimsical guitars, creating a sense of floating above a bustling metropolis. The Map is Not the Territory is a mystical and solid independent release.
