tennisThere’s one thing you can never call tennis, and that’s “boring.”

From the first serve to the last score, there’s an undeniable energy and intensity in the players, the game and even the spectators. It’s an action-packed sport that demands your attention every minute.

And Prince George’s County will get to see some of that action when it hosts the first-ever International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grade 2 Junior Tournament in North America from August 20-25. The week-long event, titled the “Prince George’s County International Hard Court Championships,” will take place at the Junior Tennis Champions Center, located at 5200 Paint Branch Parkway in College Park.

“Prince George’s County is honored to be the home of the Junior Tennis Champions Center and to build upon JTCC’s reputation as the training ground of future tennis champions by being the title sponsor of this ITF Junior Tournament,” said Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III in a press release. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the County to host athletes, their coaches, and families from around the world as well as expose our local tennis players to international competition.”

The Prince George’s County International Hard Court Championships will start with the wildcard tournament from August 14-16, during which the best female and male junior tennis players from across the globe will compete for a spot into the main draw kicking off August 20. Wildcard tournament finalists will have a spot into the qualifying tournament, which takes place August 18-19.  The championships take place two weeks before the junior U.S. Open tournament in New York City.

Other event sponsors include Holiday Inn of College Park, Mama Lucia Restaurant, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area.
