Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes’s First Annual Slam Cancer! Fundraiser Supports Young Women with Terminal Breast Cancer Dec. 20
By Annamarya Scaccia
Shay Sharpe was only 26-years-old when she learned she had Stage III breast cancer.
She didn’t know young women could be diagnosed with breast cancer. To her, it was “an old woman disease.” And she felt alone. While Sharpe met another young woman with breast cancer who offered support, she was unaware of any organizations for breast cancer patients like her, and thought young women like her “were being ignored.”
That all changed a couple years later when she was put in touch with a breast cancer group geared towards young women. Through that group, she mentored and connected with other young, inspiring women—women who weren’t “the older lady portrayed in most commercials and on the billboards.” According to her website, the “most heartfelt testimonies” were from women with Stage IV breast cancer. And from these stories and relationships, Sharpe developed the confidence to form Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes.
Created in 2011, the Baltimore-based non-profit grants wishes to women under 40-years-old who were diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. To help raise funds for the women it serves, Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes, along with Highly Favored Entertainment and Mr. Keep on Moving, will host its First Annual Slam Cancer! Holiday Fundraiser on Thursday, December 20. The poetry slam event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Busboys and Poets, 5331Baltimore Avenue in Hyattsville.
All of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes.
